Next, for more specifics and other information on how to stop panic attacks and anxiety, sign up for the free report and email mini-course at Panic Attack Relief. The author is a long time health enthusiast interested in helping people overcome anxiety.
Conventional understanding on how to stop panic attacks often seems divided between anti-anxiety pharmaceutical drugs on the one hand and gentler, natural, sometimes holistic means on the other. The difference may depend on causes of panic, but probably for health practitioners more often is rooted in two separate views of healing humans.
I. A philosophical divide in approach
According to one view, the body with its anxious brain is a chemical machine that needs to be corrected with chemicals. The other view is that a whole person is a network of biological, spiritual/emotional, and behavioral elements, each of which may need separate treatment for best remedying panic and anxiety.
This philosophical [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] divide does not fit neatly between natural and pharmaceutical approaches, however. It is common enough for doctors [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and psychiatrists not only to prescribe drugs but also to treat anxiety disorders like panic attack with cognitive behavioral therapies. Or on the other hand, one can treat panic merely with the use of calming herbs, aromatherapy items or other natural substances and ignore behavioral, spiritual or emotional issues. We'll label this side as "behavioral" for brevity's sake.
Nor does the behavioral side always require treatment. Sometimes the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] right nutritional or pharmaceutical - read "chemical"- treatment is all that is needed. More commonly, though, one will find both sides need attention, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] with the behavioral treatments the more potent, if done wisely.
II. Behavioral remedies
The behavioral side needs to be handled with wisdom because certainly there are and have been [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] methods in this area that have not been effective. For example, the typical panic attack sufferer quickly learns that avoiding certain anxiety-inducing settings, objects, or people reduces anxiety level. Avoidance behaviors become a way of life. Unfortunately the temporary relief of avoidance only serves to prolong the anxiety condition.
Indeed, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] both drugs and natural calming substances like herbs and homeopathy remedies can be used as means of avoiding more effective long term remedies. Initial or occasional use, or use when nothing else will do is one thing. Using them as a crutch to escape facing fear is another.
Another thing that panic attack [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] sufferers (too) quickly realize contrary to advise is that positive thinking isn't necessarily a magic pill. It may have a calming effect, but effectiveness depends on panic causes, how the thinking is done and what "positive" means to a given person.
As flour alone does not make bread, so controlling thinking alone may not be enough to overcome a heightened state of anxiety. More may be needed. But there are thought techniques that commonly have a calming effect.
One such technique is very simple. Gratitude. granted, that may not be easy as vivid memories of the death of a parent when you were young slam into your brain or as the accumulated stresses of life swarm like an army of ants over your consciousness, but even then everyone has things to be grateful for. As long as the thankfulness is genuine (rather than sarcastic or merely casual), gratitude has a way of reducing our anxiety. The more, the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] better. And the things for which one is grateful need not be big things, they can be little ones.
Another mind technique is to recognize [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and challenge false assumptions that may form a basis of one's anxiety. If I am a perfectionist, I may assume one small slip will result in terrible things happening to me, so the pressure is always on me. Well, if I can begin to doubt my assumption, some pressure is released along with some anxiety.
Or one may assume one is at imminent risk of some sort of disease, abandonment, or loss when that risk is actually low. Or the bad thing that might happen would not be as bad as anticipation makes it appear. Lose your job? You'll find another. Lose your spouse and home? You will recover.
This is not to say that bad things are not bad. Rather, some reduction in anxiety is possible with a more realistic projection and with [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the courage to accept what might happen. Facing one's fears is a positive-thinking way of bringing them under one's control.
Of course facing fears is the last thing that panic attack sufferers (not to mention most of the rest of society) would rather do. But when we avoid, the fear gets stronger. Along the way, other natural remedies for panic attacks may serve a useful purpose.
III. Physical remedies
Among these are calming herbs such as Kava Kava, Valerian, Passionflower, Hops, Chamomile, and Skull Cap. Effectiveness varies with each person, and some do not react well to one or more of them. And if one is already on drugs, there may be a conflict, so one must ask an attending physician before taking any. The same [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] may be said [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] for amino acids that have a calming or sedating effect such as tryptophan or GABA (the latter with B vitamins niacinamide and inositol).
Other natural remedies include physical exercise and slow, abdominal breathing. Hyperventilation is common during panic attacks. Slowed breathing reduces some of the symptoms (especially important if one is asthmatic). Regular exercise burns lactic acid and stress-hormone adrenaline and increases endorphins, thus improving mood.
And more remedies and specifics are available. In other words, there is hope for the panic attack sufferer even if s/he is discouraged, especially if all aspects of human nature are addressed.
